Scouting History:
Scouting began on July 29, 1907 with 22 boys on Brownsea Island off
the coast of England. It was here that British Lt. General Sir Robert
Baden-Powell (B-P) began the exciting world of Boy Scouting.
The Boy Scouts of America
(BSA) was founded on Feb.
8, 1910 by William D. Boyce,
Daniel Beard, James West,
and Ernest Seaton. United
States President William Taft
was honorary president of
the BSA, and former United
States President Theodore
Roosevelt was made Chief
Scout Citizen of the United
States.
By January 1911, there were
61,495 scouts and leaders in
the U.S.A. By 1994, numbers
had grown to 5,355,401. The
Scouting movement has had
over 90 million boys since its
founding in 1910.
The Boy Scouts of America has a long and proud history. Boy Scouts
have supported war and disaster relief efforts, performed countless
hours of community service, produced some of our best leaders and
saved thousands of lifes.
The B.S.A. national headquarters is located in Irving, Texas, and the
headquarters of the World Organization of Scouting Movement is in
Geneva, Switzerland.
Scouting provides a boy with an environment in which being a boy is
celebrated instead of denigrated. Moreover, it is a program designed
for boys and young men ages 11 through 18 that embodies the ideals
of Scouting as spelled out in the Scout Oath, Law, Motto and Slogan.
These principles drive the program, and challenge each boy which
enters the program to become a leader. It is a program in which his
religious faith, character and patriotism really count.
